Yes! This is real Christianity!
“lay up treasure in heaven…not on earth”
“frontier missions”
“God…may You beget martyrs among us”
This is the kind of heart devotion that I pray God will give us at SGM.
John Piper actually preached this same message at Celebration East June 1, 1999. IMO he was actually even more passionate then than he was in this video. He urged us not to focus on our organization/denomination, but rather on God Himself. I pray God will keep bringing us back to this and we will be changed.
Oh, here is a link to that message Piper preached at Celebration ‘99. You have to hear it to feel the full impact, and be warned there will be an impact.
To summarize my memory of the response in one word:
“silence”
I do not remember any public statements from SGM leadership at all in response - for or against. Many people in the congregation were stirred up by the message and asked about sending missionaries or even going as missionaries. Leaders answered each person individually but not publicly.
Also, I know of no SGM missionaries sent to any unreached people groups in the 9 years since. I think at one point a relatively small amount of money was given to Yesupadam of Love-N-Care Ministries for evangelism to Hindus in India.

SGMsingle,
Thank you for posting the link to Piper’s message.
I know the answer, but I have to ask-
How was it received?

I know that in one SGM church there is a man who is translating many of the “recommended reading” books into different languages. Does that count?

The missions presentation will last 3 weeks this year. SGM has created a 3 part video series for their annual fund raiser.
